Samuel R. Delany (born 1942) transformed science fiction from the 1960s with dazzling, linguistically and structurally adventurous novels, Babel-17 and The Einstein Intersection (both Nebula winners), Nova, and the vast, experimental Dhalgren. A major theorist and critic of the genre as well, and a pioneering Black and gay voice within it, he was named an SFWA Grand Master.
