James H. Schmitz (1911–1981) was born in Hamburg to American parents and brought a distinctive sensibility to space opera. Long before it was common, he wrote resourceful young female protagonists, the telepath Telzey Amberdon, the agent Trigger Argee, who solved their own problems. His comic novel The Witches of Karres is a beloved classic. His work has been rediscovered and championed by later writers for its bright, competent heroines.
