Robert Sheckley (1928–2005) was the genre's finest comic and satirical short-story writer, a master of the sharp premise and the sting in the tail. In dozens of stories for Galaxy and others he turned science fiction into a tool for social satire, playful, philosophical and often very funny. His work has drawn comparison with Vonnegut and Douglas Adams, both of whom he anticipated and influenced.
