Robert Emmett McDowell (1914–1975) got his start in the pulp magazines, publishing just under forty stories and novelettes between 1945 and 1954, the first a science-fiction tale, ‘The Happy Castaways’, in Planet Stories. As the pulps died he moved into paperback crime novels and then into his lasting role as a respected historian of Kentucky and the Civil War.
