Alfred Coppel (1921–2004) flew fighters in the Second World War and brought that hard-edged sensibility to a prolific run of 1950s science fiction, much of it shadowed by nuclear anxiety. He later became a best-selling author of thrillers and historical novels, but his pulp-era SF remains a vivid record of the atomic age's fears and energies.
