Basil Wells (1912–2003) was a western-Pennsylvania author who published steadily in the pulps from 1940, sometimes as ‘Gene Ellerman’, across science fiction, fantasy, western and detective fields. Collections such as Planets of Adventure and Doorways to Space gather his solid, unshowy adventure fiction. An active fan as well as a writer, he was a durable presence in the mid-century magazines.
