R. A. Lafferty (1914–2002) was one of science fiction’s true originals, an Oklahoma electrical engineer who came to fiction late and wrote in a voice steeped in tall tales, Irish blarney and Catholic mysticism. Stories like ‘Nine Hundred Grandmothers’ and ‘Slow Tuesday Night’, and novels like Past Master, bend logic and language into shapes no one else attempted. A cult figure, endlessly admired by other writers, imitated by none.
