C. C. MacApp (1917–1971), pen name of Carroll M. Capps, didn’t begin writing science fiction until his late forties, selling his first story to If in 1960 and then producing a brisk run of adventure SF through the decade; ‘The Mercurymen’ was a 1965 Nebula finalist. A noted San Francisco chess champion, he brought a gamesman’s love of tactics to his fiction.
