Percy Greg (1836–1889) wrote Across the Zodiac (1880), one of the most detailed early interplanetary novels, in which a narrator flies to Mars in an anti-gravity ship and finds a decadent civilisation. Its imagined Martian language and society, and its early use of a term for space traveller, mark it as a significant ancestor of the planetary romance.
