John Ames Mitchell (1845–1918) founded the original humour magazine Life, but for science fiction he is remembered for The Last American (1889), a satirical future-history in which Persian explorers discover the ruins of a vanished United States, and the fantasy Amos Judd. A witty, illustrated contribution to early American speculative fiction.
