Poul Anderson (1926–2001) was one of science fiction's great all-rounders, a writer of rigorous hard SF, sweeping space opera and deeply researched fantasy rooted in Norse and medieval history. Across hundreds of stories and novels he won seven Hugo and three Nebula Awards and was named a Grand Master of the field. Whether writing of time patrols or doomed Viking heroes, he brought the same intelligence and love of the well-made tale.
