Edward Bellamy (1850–1898) wrote Looking Backward: 2000–1887 (1888), a utopian novel imagining a cooperative, socialised America of the year 2000. It was a sensation, one of the best-selling books of its century, spawning ‘Nationalist Clubs’ and a real political movement. As foundational utopian science fiction, its influence on how the genre imagines better futures is enormous.
