Jules Verne (1828–1905) is one of the two or three people with a genuine claim to have invented science fiction. Across his Voyages Extraordinaires he sent readers to the centre of the Earth, around the Moon, under the sea and around the world, grounding fantastic adventure in the real science and engineering of his age. Endlessly translated and adapted, he remains among the most-published authors in any language, and the direct ancestor of everything the genre became.
