E. Nesbit (1858–1924) transformed children's literature by dropping magic into the ordinary lives of real, believable children. Five Children and It, The Phoenix and the Carpet and The Story of the Amulet created the template of everyday fantasy adventure that runs through Edward Eager, C. S. Lewis and J. K. Rowling. A founder of the socialist Fabian Society and an unconventional figure, she also wrote the enduring realist classic The Railway Children.
