Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849–1924) wrote some of the most enduring children’s books in English, Little Lord Fauntleroy, A Little Princess and, above all, The Secret Garden (1911). Their themes of transformation, hidden worlds and near-magical healing place them at the tender edge of fantasy, and their influence on children’s and imaginative literature has never faded.
