George Sand (1804–1876), pen name of Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, was one of the most famous and prolific French writers of the nineteenth century. Among her enormous output are collections of rural fairy tales (Contes d’une grand-mère) and fantastic and visionary works such as Laura, a Journey into the Crystal, which anticipates the hollow-earth and inner-world fantasy. A major literary figure with a genuine fantastic strain.
