John Kendrick Bangs (1862–1922) was a prolific American humorist and editor whose comic fantasies set among the famous dead, above all A House-Boat on the Styx (1895), were so distinctive that the afterlife-comedy subgenre is named ‘Bangsian fantasy’ after him. Light, clever and endlessly inventive, his work is a charming corner of the genre’s prehistory.
