E. F. Benson (1867–1940) is loved for the arch social comedies of Mapp and Lucia, but he was also one of the great Edwardian ghost-story writers. Tales like ‘The Room in the Tower’, ‘Caterpillars’ and ‘Negotium Perambulans’ are anthology staples of quiet, creeping horror. A prolific man of letters, his supernatural fiction stands with the best of the English uncanny tradition.
