Arlo Bates (1850–1918) was a Maine-born journalist, poet and long-serving professor of English at MIT, and editor of the Boston Sunday Courier. Among his novels and stories are works touching the supernatural and the uncanny, alongside his novels of Boston cultural life (The Pagans, The Philistines). A cultivated man of letters of the New England literary scene.
