Eugène Sue (1804–1857) was one of the great popular serialists of nineteenth-century France, whose The Mysteries of Paris invented the sprawling urban ‘mysteries’ genre and whose The Wandering Jew retold the immortal-wanderer legend on an epic scale. His melodramatic, socially charged fiction fed directly into the traditions of popular and fantastic literature.
