L. Frank Baum (1856–1919) created Oz, the first great American fairyland, in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) and returned to it across thirteen more novels. Writing as the self-styled 'Royal Historian of Oz', he built a whole secondary world of enduring charm and invention that has never been out of print, and set the template for American children's fantasy that L. Frank Baum's successors are still working within.
