Ruth Plumly Thompson (1891–1976) took over the Oz series after L. Frank Baum died, writing nineteen Oz books between 1921 and 1939, more than Baum himself. Fast, funny and fond of puns and new kingdoms, her instalments kept the fairyland alive for a new generation of readers and are a substantial part of the Oz canon in their own right.
