H. P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) transformed horror by shifting its terror from the supernatural to the cosmic, a universe vast, indifferent and full of things that shatter the human mind that glimpses them. Little known in his lifetime and published mostly in Weird Tales, he built the loose 'Cthulhu Mythos' that later writers have expanded ever since. His influence on horror, fantasy and science fiction is out of all proportion to his modest lifetime readership.
