Leigh Brackett (1915–1978) was one of the great figures of Golden Age science fiction, nicknamed the 'Queen of Space Opera' for her lush, romantic tales of a dying, sword-and-blaster Mars and Venus. She led a remarkable double life as a Hollywood screenwriter, working with Howard Hawks on films including The Big Sleep, Rio Bravo and The Long Goodbye, and, at the very end of her life, writing an early draft of The Empire Strikes Back. She was married to fellow SF writer Edmond Hamilton.
