E. E. ‘Doc’ Smith (1890–1965), a food chemist by profession, hence the nickname, effectively invented modern space opera. The Skylark of Space (serialised 1928) blew the walls off the pulp imagination, and his sweeping Lensman series gave the genre its template for galaxy-spanning conflict, super-science and cosmic stakes. Clunky prose and all, his influence on everything from Star Wars to Green Lantern is impossible to overstate.
