Lord Dunsany (1878–1957), Edward Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany, was one of the founding figures of modern fantasy. His invented pantheon in The Gods of Pegāna and the exquisite prose of The King of Elfland's Daughter and his Jorkens tales created a template of imagined mythologies that shaped Tolkien, Lovecraft, Le Guin and countless others. A prolific Irish peer, playwright and sportsman, he wrote some of the most beautiful fantasy in the language.
