Adelbert von Chamisso (1781–1838) was a French-born German Romantic writer and botanist, remembered in the fantastic tradition for Peter Schlemihl’s Remarkable Story (1814), the fable of a man who sells his shadow to the devil. A crisp, resonant parable of alienation, it influenced generations of fantasists. Chamisso was also a serious naturalist who sailed on a scientific voyage around the world.
