Alain-René Lesage (1668–1747) wrote The Devil upon Two Sticks (Le Diable boiteux, 1707), in which a limping demon lifts the roofs off Madrid to reveal the secret lives beneath, a witty fantastical device much imitated, as well as the great picaresque Gil Blas. A significant figure in the fantastic-satirical tradition.
