Robert Paltock (1697–1767) wrote The Life and Adventures of Peter Wilkins (1751), a Crusoe-style imaginary voyage whose hero discovers a race of gentle flying people and marries one of them. A blend of travel-tale, romance and proto-science-fiction, its winged ‘glumms’ and ‘gawrys’ charmed and influenced later Romantic writers. A minor but genuine ancestor of the fantastic voyage.
