Andre Norton (1912–2005), born Alice Mary Norton, wrote more than a hundred novels across a seventy-year career and drew countless young readers into science fiction and fantasy with the Witch World series, the Solar Queen books and many more. Writing under a male pen name in a male-dominated field, she became the first woman to be named a Grand Master by the SFWA and the first woman to win the genre's Gandalf Award. Her influence on the field's younger writers is incalculable.
