Marion Zimmer Bradley (1930–1999) built one of science fiction’s most enduring shared worlds in her Darkover series, a lost human colony where psychic ‘matrix’ science meets feudal culture. She reached a vast wider audience with The Mists of Avalon (1983), a feminist retelling of the Arthurian legend from the women’s side. A prolific editor and anthologist, she was central to the growth of the field, though her reputation is now inseparable from serious, credible allegations of abuse.
