Jonathan Swift (1667–1745), the great Anglo-Irish satirist, wrote Gulliver’s Travels (1726), a fantastic voyage whose flying island of Laputa, immortal Struldbruggs and rational Houyhnhnms make it a direct ancestor of science fiction. Swift used the imaginary journey to dissect politics, science and human folly with unmatched savagery, establishing a template the genre has drawn on ever since.
