Edwin A. Abbott (1838–1926) was a headmaster and theologian who wrote one immortal work of the imagination: Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions (1884). Narrated by a square in a two-dimensional world who glimpses the third dimension, it is at once a witty satire of Victorian hierarchy and a genuinely mind-expanding piece of mathematical science fiction, beloved by scientists and readers alike ever since.
