Kate Wilhelm (1928–2018) wrote subtle, character-driven science fiction, the cloning-and-survival novel Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang won the Hugo, and ‘The Planners’ the Nebula. A co-founder of the influential Clarion Writers’ Workshop and later a fine mystery novelist, she brought literary depth and psychological realism to the field over a long, distinguished career.
