Judith Merril (1923–1997) wrote memorable fiction, the post-nuclear ‘That Only a Mother’ and the novel Shadow on the Hearth, but her largest influence came as an editor. Her long-running ‘Year’s Best S-F’ anthologies broadened the genre’s definition and championed the British New Wave to American audiences. A founder of the Milford Writers’ Workshop, she later emigrated to Canada and built a major SF library in Toronto that bears her name.
