Jack Vance (1916–2013) was one of the genre’s supreme stylists, his ornate, ironic prose and gorgeously realised worlds unmistakable. The Dying Earth invented an entire mode of far-future science-fantasy; the Demon Princes and Planet of Adventure novels, the ‘Cugel’ tales and the Lyonesse trilogy display his wit and invention. A multiple Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy winner, and an SFWA Grand Master.
