Harry Bates (1900–1981) launched Astounding Stories of Super-Science in 1930 and edited it through its early adventure-pulp years. As a writer he is remembered above all for ‘Farewell to the Master’ (1940), whose robot Gnut and the twist of its closing line became the basis for the classic film The Day the Earth Stood Still. A shaping figure of the pre-Campbell magazine era.
