David Ely (1927–2021) wrote the unsettling novel Seconds (1963), in which a bored man buys a surgically-created new identity and life, only to find the bargain a trap, a subtle science-fictional parable filmed memorably in 1966. His spare, disquieting fiction explores the darker edges of the American dream.
