A. E. van Vogt (1912–2000) was one of the defining writers of Astounding’s Golden Age. Slan, with its persecuted superhuman mutants, became a rallying myth for SF fandom; The World of Null-A and The Voyage of the Space Beagle showcased his breathless, complexity-piling storytelling. His dreamlike plots, famously built in 800-word scene units, enthralled a generation, and he was named an SFWA Grand Master shortly before his death.
