Bill Brittain (1930–2011) was a Rochester-born fifth-grade teacher who published science fiction and mystery stories in the magazines from the 1950s and 60s before finding lasting fame as a children’s author. His fantasies of the New England village of Coven Tree, above all The Wish Giver, a Newbery Honor Book, are beloved classics of American children’s literature.
