Van Tassel Sutphen (1861–1945) wrote The Doomsman (1906), set in a future America fallen into ruin and ruled from a decaying fortress-city, with civilisation reduced to warring remnants, an early and atmospheric contribution to the American post-apocalyptic tradition.
