Sam Merwin, Jr. (1910–1996) was one of the more important editors of the 1940s, raising the literary standard of Startling Stories and Thrilling Wonder Stories during his 1945–1951 tenure and drawing strong work from the field’s rising talents. A Princeton-trained journalist, he wrote science fiction, mystery and romance himself under several names, an editor’s editor of the transitional pulp era.
