Robert Bloch (1917–1994) was writing for Weird Tales in his teens under Lovecraft’s mentorship, and went on to a prolific career across horror, fantasy, crime and science fiction. His novel Psycho gave Hitchcock one of cinema’s defining shockers, and stories like ‘Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper’ show his gift for the sardonic twist. A beloved figure in fandom, witty and generous, he won a Hugo for ‘That Hell-Bound Train’.
