Rick Raphael (1919–1994) was a newspaperman who wrote only about ten science-fiction stories but made them count. Code Three, about the vast vehicles and crews policing the superhighways of the future, and the water-rationing tales of The Thirst Quenchers, show his gift for dramatising competent people at work in a convincingly engineered future. A small, admired body of hard, procedural SF.
