Philip Wylie (1902–1971) was a versatile and provocative writer whose novel Gladiator (1930), about a man with superhuman strength, is often cited as an inspiration for Superman. With Edwin Balmer he wrote When Worlds Collide and its sequel, filmed to great effect, and his later work engaged nuclear anxiety (Tomorrow!) and social criticism (Generation of Vipers). A significant popular-SF and cultural voice.
