M. P. Shiel (1865–1947) wrote The Purple Cloud (1901), one of the great ‘last man on Earth’ novels, in which a poisonous cloud extinguishes humanity and a lone survivor wanders a depopulated world into madness and rebirth. His ornate, feverish prose and cosmic scale made him a cult figure of apocalyptic and scientific romance.
