Gabriel de Tarde (1843–1904) was an eminent French sociologist and criminologist who wrote Underground Man (Fragment d’histoire future, 1896), imagining humanity driven beneath the surface after the Sun cools, and there building a refined aesthetic civilisation. A thoughtful, elegant contribution to far-future and catastrophe fiction from a major social theorist.
