E. V. Odle (1890–1942) wrote The Clockwork Man (1923), in which a man from the far future, his body regulated by an implanted mechanism, stumbles into a 1920s English village cricket match. Often cited as one of the first ‘cyborg’ novels, it is a witty and prescient piece of early science fiction.
