Chandler Davis (1926–2022) was an eminent mathematician (several theorems bear his name) who wrote thoughtful science fiction, as ‘Chan Davis’, from ‘The Nightmare’ in Astounding (1946), stories engaging cooperation, disarmament, gender and labour. Subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee, he refused to cooperate on First Amendment grounds, was dismissed from Michigan, jailed for six months, and blacklisted; he built a distinguished second career in Canada. A rare union of mathematics, SF and moral courage.
