Arthur Porges (1915–2006) was a Chicago-born mathematics teacher who, after the war, wrote about 220 short stories across science fiction, fantasy and mystery, never collected in his lifetime. In SF he is best known for ‘The Ruum’ (F&SF, 1953), a gruelling chase in which an implacable alien collecting-robot pursues a man across the wilderness. A master of the taut, idea-driven short story.
